Introduction to Turkish and Arab makam (maqam) systems

Welcome to the third edition of the miq productions makam theory website. Here, you will learn about the melodies of musics from the Middle East and parts of North Africa, and the intricate tuning and theoretical systems that have been developed to make sense of the melodic structures.

Note: all notation used on this site was created using the amazing open source notation software Lilypond, the only notation that provides functional support for the notation of Middle Eastern musical forms.
