For starters, there are hundreds of thousands of mp3's at mp3.com, the first major legal mp3 download site in the world. At mp3.com, artists upload mp3's for free and users can download the sounds for free, too: the site makes money from advertising and from the sales of CDs, and artists make money from the CD sales, as well. The advantage of mp3.com is the number of artists and styles of music represented; this is also it's biggest problem, as most of the sounds on the site are pure crap. It's like shopping for used CDs...
There are thousands of special interest mp3 sites. For example, there is a large mp3 archive of Captain Beefheart bootlegs at http://www.beefheart.com
